HERBFEST 2013

This Herbs, Health Food & Natural Products Expo presents great opportunities for small and medium enterprises seeking knowledge/training, marketing opportunities, partnership and funding for food, herbal and natural development in Nigeria and the sub-Saharan region. Other beneficiaries include , Research Institutes, Conservationists, Academia, Media, Investors, Traditional Medicine Practitioners and Indigenous healers.

The Event Featured the Following:
A. Exhibition/Expo: The industry focus is on companies or entrepreneurs with products and technologies in any of the following fields:
i) HERBAL MEDICINES/REMEDIES AND MEDICINAL & AROMATIC PLANTS PRODUCTS
ii) HEALTH, COSMETICS AND BEAUTY PRODUCTS
iii) HEALTH FOODS AND FOOD INGREDIENTS
iv) NATURAL PRODUCTS
v) VEGETABLE SAPS AND EXTRACTS
vi) BIOTECHNOLOGY or TECHNOLOGY INNOVATIONS
vii) DOCUMENTATIONS
viii) EQUIPMENTS, fabrications and services


B. Symposium/Conference: This theme for this year's Symposium is "The Development of Novel Natural Products as Dietary Supplements, Phytomedicines and Nutraceuticals". The symposium will feature the following sections:
• Herbal Dietary Supplements
• BioBusiness (including Bio-Entrepreneurship and Investments)
• Panel Discussion
• Medicinal, Aromatic & Pesticidal Plants Research & Development
• Regulations and Standardization
• Clinical Evaluation of Herbal Medicines
• Products' Profiles
The Bio-entrepreneurship section will address the numerous challenges posed in the course of getting products out into the markets and how to overcome the risks involved in opening up biobusinesses. Interested bio-entrepreneurs are encouraged to come and listen to renowned bio-entrepreneurs and company CEOs and acquire knowledge on who is and what it takes to be an ideal bio-entrepreneur.
The BioBusiness section will address the evolving business planning needs of beginning and experienced rural entrepreneurs. HerBFEST 2013 will focus on creating successful and sustainable BioBusinesses and Partnerships. Emphasis will be laid on educating farmers, research scientists and bioentrepreneurs in developing business plans.
The Investment session will feature renowned financial institutions such as the Central Bank of Nigeria, Micro-finance banks, Bank of Industry, Export/Import Promotion Banks, Commercial Banks and Local/Foreign Investors.
In addition the symposium will highlight the role of herbal medicinal products in tackling health inequalities and Reassess the role of traditional/herbal medicines in achieving the Health and Economic Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

C. Training: The theme for HerbFEST 2013 is "Development and Commercialization of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants". The training will center on Natural Products Development, Building sustainable bio-businesses, Certification, Organic Farming, Meeting Standards, Understanding Consumer Preferences, and Investment opportunities for indigenous products and produce. The following are the topics for the training:
• Practical Steps to the Development of Novel Natural Products as Dietary Supplements, Phytomedicines & Nutraceuticals
• Standards and Monographs for the Establishment of Efficacy and Safety of Herbal Medicines
• Certification of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Special Reference to Organics
• Commercialization of Research Based Products
• Standardization & Quality Assurance of Herbal Medicinal Products.

D. Abstract/Poster Session: Select number of research papers will be presented. This session will highlight recent developments in the area of sourcing, processing and development of herbal and natural products. It will in addition create networking opportunities for funding and research grants.

E. Product Profiles: Companies were invited to sponsor this session and 5-30 minutes will be given to each to use in promoting and showcasing their products and services.

Output and Project Development:
Producers considering innovative management practices and immature markets will use the training knowledge and knowledge gathered from the symposium and interactions to map out strategies for taking advantage of new opportunities such as organic farming, on-farm processing, small and medium scale production of herbal and natural products, direct marketing and rural tourism.
Other output from this project will include the following:
• New natural products introduced to the market, and strategies for doing so learned.
• Export/import opportunities promoted and bio-business introduced as a poverty alleviation and health promotion venture
• Long term framework for a biennial natural products expo in the sub-region, established.
• Equitable bio-partnerships between and among West African natural products companies, entrepreneurs, researchers as well as financing organizations, developed.
• Project document on broad strategies for development of a biodiversity business sector in the sub-region, developed.
• Database containing profiles of natural products companies in the sub-region, developed.
• Educational opportunity provided to a wide range of stakeholders including the public.
