InterCEDD owns an extensive farm where medicinal plants are grown under the best conditions. These plants can be sourced from InterCEDD using the Biotrade facility of the center.

The Herbarium pixCOMPENDUM OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN NIGERIA
BDCP has in collaboration with Nigeria Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) conducted a survey of the medicinal plants of Nigeria.
The ethnobotanical survey is an on-going process; however, studies have already been carried out during a one year period to collect information on the medicinal plants found in the South-Eastern and North Central zones of Nigeria. The surveys were spread across seasons so as to get maximum information and also to cross check the information provided by the local informants during the earlier visits. About 230 plants have been documented for North Central region while over 300 have been recorded for the South-East region. This information has been published while the data has been stored in InterCEDD's database.

Traditional Knowledge, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), and Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS)
The need for clear identification of the role of intellectual property (IP) systems with regard to traditional knowledge as well as new mechanisms for the preservation, protection and equitable utilization of traditional knowledge (TK) has remained a focal issue in international policy discussions. InterCEDD employs the BDCP model to ensure proper compensation and protection of local communities. The BDCP model was also used in developing Nigeria's IPR&ABS regime for TM &TK by Government Agencies and experts.

"AFRICA ICBG (International Cooperative Biodiversity Group)" DRUG DEVELOPMENT CONSORTIUM
This is a pre-existing research consortium, which emerged from the International Cooperative Biodiversity Group on "Drug Development and Conservation of Biological Diversity in West and Central Africa".

The main goal of the consortium is the development of an effective platform for the sustainable management of natural resources that seeks to promote biodiversity conservation, drug discovery that addresses unmet human health needs and economic development of rural communities in host countries. The central approach is through building partnerships between various local stake-holders and members of the project, as well as strengthening existing collaborative programs and institutions.

Moringa Leaf Powder.

Moringa Leaf Powder - contains all the richness of the Moringa plant. It is a good anti-oxidant and detoxifier. In powder form, its easy to add to drinks and food.

  DO YOU KNOW?

The overriding goal is to increase the net worth of West-Central African forests as living resources and to demonstrate the feasibility of using drug development as an incentive for the conservation of biological diversity. Scientists from the participating developing countries are involved in all aspects of the program so that information, principles and procedures developed during this work is internalized in Africa and extended beyond the duration of grants funding and lessons learned will be available for replication, where suitable, in other countries of the region and elsewhere. Targeted training and infrastructure enhancement have been provided in some institutions within the consortium. Thematic linkages have been established with related biodiversity conservation and drug discovery efforts in the project areas so that in-kind support will be leveraged in order to extend the impact of the project beyond funded activity.

The research design emphasizes the identification of new therapeutic leads from a wide variety of plant sources, fungi and algae, and linking this information with both traditional ethnobotanical and modern ecological knowledge. Compounds with appropriate biological activities will be co-developed with assistance from related drug development programs at the Strathclyde Institute for Drug Research, Glasgow, Scotland, with whom we have a cooperative research agreement or through case-by-case collaborative arrangements with pharmaceutical companies, including companies based in Africa.

InterCEDD is a member of this consortium.
